The much-anticipated 190th Oktoberfest, fondly known as the Wiesn, commenced on September 20th, marking a global celebration of Bavarian culture and tradition. This year's event, as always, is a crucial representative of Bavarian culture on a global scale, serving as an important ambassador for Bavarian tradition, cultural identity, and way of life.
The city of Munich, the heart of the festivities, welcomes many international guests each year. The majority of these visitors hail from the USA, Italy, the UK, France, and Spain. The event is not just a cultural extravaganza but also a significant economic driver for Munich and the Free State.
Bertram Brossardt, the CEO of the vbw - Association of Bavarian Businesses e.V., highlighted the economic significance of the Oktoberfest. He stated that the event is an important source of income for the hotel and catering industry, retail, showman industry, and service providers in the event sector. In fact, the total economic value of this year's Oktoberfest is expected to be nearly 1.6 billion euros, according to calculations by the city of Munich.
In addition to its economic importance, the vbw also emphasizes the cultural significance of the Oktoberfest. Brossardt, in his message to the visitors, wished all a pleasant and peaceful Wiesn 2025.
To manage the high number of visitors, the Oktoberfest creates about 13,000 additional jobs, according to the city of Munich as the organizer. This year's Oktoberfest is a testament to the event's inseparable link with Munich and the Free State.
Looking forward, Brossardt expects a similar positive economic effect from a successful Olympic bid, further cementing Munich's position as a global cultural and economic powerhouse.
