Georgia's Colonel's Island Terminal Gets $6M Boost for Efficiency and Sustainability

The Georgia General Assembly has approved a $6 million budget for special harbour improvements at Colonel's Island. The project aims to boost efficiency and sustainability at the terminal.

The expansion plans include a new on-terminal rail yard, which will enhance connectivity and reduce congestion. Additionally, a fourth berth is being constructed to accommodate more vessels, minimizing delays and reducing unnecessary emissions. GPA is also investing over $260 million to expand the terminal by approximately 40 hectares.

GPA is committed to sustainability. It is implementing green measures such as LED lighting and LEED-certified buildings to reduce emissions. The new berth will also contribute to this by minimizing vessel delays and thus reducing emissions. Marilyn Taylor, Senior Director of Trade Development, Ocean Carrier and Non-Container Sales at GPA, is leading these efforts.

The authority is also collaborating with Georgia Power and its engineering team to support increased electric vehicle volumes. This will further boost the terminal's sustainability credentials. Furthermore, GPA is working with partners and customers to efficiently handle diverted news from Baltimore port disruptions without impacting existing business.

The Colonel's Island terminal expansion, backed by a $6 million allocation, will enhance efficiency and sustainability. The new rail yard, fourth berth, and green initiatives will reduce emissions and improve overall operations. GPA's commitment to handling diverted news and increasing electric vehicle volumes demonstrates its dedication to growth and sustainability.
