Gabe Newell's New Superyacht Project: Revolutionizing Shipbuilding

Gaming tycoon Gabe Newell has taken the yachting world by storm, acquiring Dutch shipyard Oceanco and announcing ambitious plans for his new superyacht, Project Y727. Meanwhile, the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show, despite a pricey visitor pass, showcased 120 superyachts worth €4.3bn and 50 world premieres, including the first Admiral Armani yacht.

Newell, co-founder of Valve Corporation, purchased Oceanco in August 2025. He plans to revolutionize shipbuilding by integrating machine learning technologies. Currently, his 364-ft yacht, Leviathan, is under construction at the yard. However, his most anticipated project is Project Y727, a 130-meter flagship superyacht designed for scale, technology, sustainability, and long-range cruising.

The 2025 Monaco Yacht Show, held annually, featured an impressive lineup. Damen Yachting introduced a mandatory dual charter package for the Xplorer 60 yacht and its support vessel. The show also saw the debut of the first 236-ft Admiral Armani yacht, designed by fashion icon Giorgio Armani. Heesen Yachts, a regular attendee, skipped the show this year, opting for a new location in Cap-d'Ail.

Newell's interest in yachts extends beyond leisure. He lives full-time aboard his vessels, using them for exploration, science, privacy, and family time. His commitment to sustainability and technology is set to shape the future of yacht production. Laurens Last, owner of Heesen Yachts, also plans to incorporate AI and robotics into yacht production.

The yachting industry continues to evolve, with tech moguls like Gabe Newell driving innovation. Despite some visitors finding the €700 day pass expensive, the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show remained a premier event, showcasing the latest in superyacht technology and design. As Newell's Project Y727 takes shape, the industry eagerly awaits the fusion of technology and luxury yachting.
