French Tanker Boracay Under Scrutiny for Russia's 'Ghost Fleet' and Denmark Drone Incidents

A French-flagged tanker, the Boracay, has been under scrutiny for its suspected role in Russia's 'ghost fleet' and recent drone incidents in Denmark. The vessel, which has been anchored off France's coast, has sparked investigations from both French authorities and the European Union.

The Boracay, flying the flag of Benin, was first noticed anchored off Denmark's coast from September 22 to 25. Coincidentally, mysterious drone flights that disrupted air traffic in Denmark occurred during this period, raising suspicions about the tanker's involvement. French military personnel later boarded the vessel, leading to an investigation by the French Navy on September 30, 2025. The investigation was initiated due to suspicions that the Boracay was part of a 'shadow fleet' aiding Russia in circumventing Western sanctions on its oil trade.

The European Union has since blacklisted the Boracay for its alleged role in helping Russia evade sanctions. In response to the tanker's refusal to cooperate, an investigation has been opened by the Brest Public Prosecutor's Office. French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that France is investigating the Boracay for 'serious crimes', although specific details about these crimes have not been disclosed.

The Boracay, currently anchored off Saint-Nazaire, France, remains under investigation for its suspected involvement in Russia's 'ghost fleet' and the drone incidents in Denmark. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of the tanker's activities and potential violations of international sanctions.
