Former NFL Star John Leake Sentenced to 2.5 Years for $8.1M Investment Fraud
Former NFL linebacker John Robert Leake has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for masterminding a fraudulent investment scheme. The scam, which operated from June 2015 to March 2020, targeted primarily US investors with promises of lucrative business projects in the United States and the Middle East.
Leake, who played for the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, and Green Bay Packers, recorded 12 career tackles before his legal troubles. He pleaded guilty to one count of transactional money laundering and one count of wire fraud. Six victims invested approximately $8.1 million, suffering losses exceeding $5.3 million. Leake is required to reimburse his victims this amount.
Leake convinced investors that he had personally invested large sums into fabricated lucrative business ventures. He enticed them with promises of lucrative prospects in Ghana and Alaska, which never materialized. He misappropriated investor monies for gaming expenses and made fraudulent 'interest' and 'capital' payments to previous victims. Leake falsely assured victims that his businesses were successful and he possessed significant personal wealth, lacking the assets or income to repay them.
Leake's fraudulent activities have resulted in significant financial losses for his victims. The court has ordered him to reimburse them $5.3 million. His 30-month prison sentence reflects the severity of his crimes.
