Former Minister Proposes External Intelligence Body for Japan's Economic Independence
Former Japanese economic security minister Takayuki Kobayashi has proposed the establishment of an external intelligence organization. He made this call at Econosec Japan 2025, stressing the need for Japan's economic independence.
Kobayashi, a candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party's leadership, argued that Japan's economic growth relies heavily on its ability to navigate international situations influenced by policies like 'America First'. He pointed out the dependence of Japan's information and communications industry on US companies, urging the nation to show its resolve.
To bolster economic security, Kobayashi suggested creating an intelligence body. This organization would evaluate economic risks and prepare for potential threats. He believes that if Japan had predicted US tariff moves earlier, the impact could have been mitigated.
Kobayashi's proposal comes as Japan seeks to strengthen its social security. If established, the intelligence organization would aim to enhance Japan's ability to anticipate and respond to economic challenges on the global stage.
