First-Ever RNG Facility Launched in NJ, Boosting Clean Energy and Jobs

OPAL Fuels, South Jersey Industries (SJI), and Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) have launched a commercial-scale Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The project, a first for the region, reduces emissions and improves local air quality while creating jobs and bolstering American energy independence.

The facility, with a capacity of 2,500 SCFM of landfill gas, is expected to produce over 650,000 MMBtu or approximately 4.6 million gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) of RNG annually. This clean fuel alternative to diesel and conventional natural gas is captured and processed from landfill gas.

The project is a significant milestone for SJI, marking its first RNG delivery into the pipeline system of South Jersey Gas, a SJI subsidiary. It also represents the first collaboration between OPAL Fuels and SJI, part of their 50/50 joint venture to develop, construct, own, and operate RNG facilities. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for October 2025.

The RNG facility in Egg Harbor Township underscores the commitment of OPAL Fuels, SJI, and ACUA to innovation and renewable energy. By converting landfill gas into a lower-carbon fuel, the project not only reduces emissions but also contributes to American energy independence.
