Farewell to Carola Bridge
Navigability Challenges Persist on the Elbe River Amidst Drought Conditions
The Elbe River, a major waterway in Germany, is currently navigable but faces significant challenges due to low water levels caused by an ongoing drought. This drought, combined with extreme heat and precipitation deficits since summer 2025, has threatened stable navigation and freight shipping on the river for extended periods, particularly during the low-water season.
In the specific area around the demolished Carol Bridge in Dresden, there are no recent updates regarding the bridge reconstruction or immediate restoration of navigability. However, a significant development is the planned construction of the Elbe barrage at Děčín downstream, which aims to raise water levels by up to 3.5 meters to enable stable year-round freight shipping on the Elbe. This project is currently undergoing a new environmental assessment, with cross-border consultations involving Saxony (where Dresden is located) anticipated.
Current Status and Timeline
- Current navigability: The Elbe is navigable but severely hindered by low water levels, reducing freight and possibly passenger navigation reliability.
- Carol Bridge area: No specific updates on rebuilding or navigation restoration around the demolished Carol Bridge in Dresden were found in the latest news.
- Long-term improvements: The Děčín barrage project aims to secure stable, year-round freight navigation but is still in environmental assessment (expected completion around 2027), indicating improved navigability might not be realized immediately.
On-Site Developments
Remnants of train C have been recovered behind pillar D this week. Excavators are on site to remove the last bridge pillar. The Water and Shipping Authority (WSA) will decide on the further course of action. The construction companies involved in the project are thanked for their speed in completing the demolition, which progressed faster than initially planned.
Repair work on the Elbe bed (ground under the river) has begun. A map showing the depth of the Elbe at each point has been created. The dredger Domarin is needed to level a problematic area below the Filmnights site. Jörg Falasch, the engineer overseeing the project, states that the Domarin can clear the way itself.
Restoration Plans
Restoring the navigability of the Elbe is a top priority. The Elbe cycle path on the new town side will also be restored after the repairs. Grit Ernst, the mayor of Dresden, mentions securing the bridge caps, but no specific date is given for completion. The bridge has been demolished, except for pillar D.
Optimism remains that the deadline for restoring the Elbe's navigability will be met. However, the low water levels may pose a challenge. Damage caused by the demolition is being investigated and will be repaired. Dredging is still ongoing at pillar D.

- The planned construction of the Elbe barrage at Děčín aims to enhance navigation in the transport sector, as it aims to raise water levels for stable year-round freight shipping. This project is currently undergoing an environmental assessment, with its expected completion around 2027.
- In the industry and finance realm, the ongoing navigability challenges on the Elbe River due to drought conditions have negatively affected freight shipping, possibly causing delays and expenses in logistics and supply chains.
