Fairmont FCU Warns 187K Members of Data Breach
Fairmont Federal Credit Union (FFCU) has warned 187,038 members of a data breach that occurred in late 2023. The breach, which exposed sensitive personal and financial information, was claimed by the Black Basta ransomware group. FFCU has not yet reported any fraud related to the incident but urges members to remain vigilant.
The breach, discovered in January 2024, involved unauthorized access to FFCU's systems between September 30 and October 18, 2023. Exposed data includes full names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and medical information. In response, FFCU is offering complimentary credit monitoring and reports to affected members.
Black Basta, which operates as Ransomware-as-a-Service since 2022, has targeted over 500 organizations worldwide since April 2022. The group's activity was highlighted in a joint Cybersecurity Advisory issued by the FBI, CISA, HHS, and MS-ISAC in May 2024. Leaked chat logs from February 2025 revealed internal conflicts within the group and exposed member details.
FFCU members affected by the breach should take advantage of the complimentary credit monitoring services offered by the credit union. While no fraud has been reported, the exposed sensitive information makes members potential targets. The Black Basta group's history of attacks underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and cybersecurity awareness.
