Hot off the rails: OUIGO trains get a swanky makeover

OUIGO didn't waste a second unveiling their brand new train to the press on April 24, 2023, at Paris Gare de Lyon. Dressed in the iconic pink and blue, this modernized carriage is part of SNCF Voyageurs' ambitious plan to nab 30% of the high-speed market by 2030. Currently featuring 38 carriages, the OUIGO fleet is set to expand, with a goal of 50 carriages by mid-2027.

The initial renovated carriage, already in action, boasts some fantastic passenger perks. One exciting addition is the introduction of a "relaxation zone" for stretching your legs and letting the kids run wild during the journey. Unfortunately, no catering nook is planned yet. According to Alain Krakovitch, director of TGV-INTERCITES, this is due to the catering area on TGV Inoui increasing the ticket prices, which OUIGO wants to keep low. SNCF Voyageurs is mulling over introducing some catering in these zones. As Jérôme Laffon, director of OUIGO, puts it, "It's under study."

More improvements include electrical outlets for all users! But don't forget your USB-C cables. The duo seats offer a standard 220V outlet and a USB-C outlet. In a cozy quad of four seats, each user can charge their phone as needed. The train gets a fresh facelift, and the seats will become more accessible to people with disabilities. Cyclists will find solace in the 8 bike hooks (16 for the entire TGV OUIGO) ramping up. The exterior design remains unchanged, with the vibrant pink and blue colors still kissing the track.

The current options system, including choosing a seat or adding an extra bag, will remain unchanged. These new trains boast 10% more baggage space, and the journey price should stay the same. Alain Krakovitch assures, "The investment will not impact the price of tickets for passengers." A jaw-dropping 600 million euros will be poured into modernizing OUIGO.

These new OUIGO trains are expected to be less energy-consuming. "Insulated glass is used to reduce the impact of high temperatures and better regulate air conditioning on board", notes Jérôme Laffon. The water in the sinks will be recycled, too.

New Horizons for OUIGO

To support this growth, OUIGO plans to introduce new connections starting December 2025, primarily to the Basque Coast, and fortify existing lines like Paris-Rennes, Paris-Lyon, and Paris-Montpellier with additional round trips. Studies are also underway to expand the offer between Paris and Lille, or between regional metropolises. By 2027, OUIGO hopes to serve nearly 75 stations, compared to about 60 today.
