European Contest Climaborough Awards Winners Amidst Climate Crisis

In an ambitious move towards a greener future, the European Commission is funding a network of cities and industrial transformation projects aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The initiative, part of the Horizon Europe programme, focuses on waste management, green energy, and sustainable mobility.

The 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission is at the heart of this endeavour. This mission aims to deliver 100 cities that are climate neutral by 2030, acting as innovation hubs and enabling the wider adoption of sustainable practices across Europe by 2050. The cities will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, integrating renewable energy, promoting sustainable urban mobility, and improving waste management systems with innovative solutions.

One such project is TRINEFLEX, which targets energy- and resource-intensive industries responsible for a significant share of emissions. This project develops digital and sustainable tools to transform these sectors, contributing to the climate-neutrality goal. TRINEFLEX, running from September 2022 to August 2026, has a budget of over €19 million, primarily funded by the European Commission. It involves 29 partners from nine European countries, including research centers and SMEs specialized in technological innovations.

Some of the cities involved are highlighted in the Twin Cities / Mission Cities 2025 program. For instance, Ioannina, Greece, is implementing multiple climate actions such as creating Climate Neutral Zones, enhancing green schoolyards, and promoting sustainable, walkable urban spaces through micromobility and green-blue infrastructure. Engagement with citizens and overcoming institutional barriers are part of the focus to ensure inclusive, effective climate actions.

The broader Cluster 5 - Climate, Energy and Mobility under Horizon Europe supports innovation to decarbonize the energy and transport sectors across Europe, ensuring these sectors are more climate- and environment-friendly, resilient, and inclusive. This complements efforts at the city level.

The Climaborough tender, funded by the European research program Horizon Europe (Horizon-Miss-2021 call) with a contribution of around 11 million euros (total cost is 11.4 million), selected 15 winning proposals. These proposals are aimed at developing innovative, low-cost solutions. Each city in the project has defined a specific challenge considered central to achieving climate neutrality by 2030.

The projects, which are part of a programme to develop solutions in 12 cities, include Athens focusing on energy and buildings, Grenoble-Alpes on the environmental impact of an urban regeneration project, Differdange aiming to produce 100% local clean electricity, Sofia aiming to reduce traffic in the city center, and Ioannina focusing on the impact of wastewater on Lake Pamvotida.

The European Commission chose three of these proposals, including Italian entries, with "Traccia-To" and "Rivestito" from Torino, projects related to waste collection. In Cascais, the focus is on separate collection of waste, in Maribor on waste collection of WEEE, and in Torino on waste collection of textiles.

The projects aim to provide innovative solutions for waste management, energy, and mobility. The tender, with a budget of 2.4 million euros, was open to all economic operators. The projects involve Torino, Athens, Ioannina (Greece), Differdange (Luxembourg), Grenoble (France), Sofia (Bulgaria), Cascais (Portugal), Maribor (Slovenia), Krk (Hungary), Katowice (Poland), Pilsen (Czech Republic), Prijedor (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

These projects are required to adhere to the standards set by the European Union, as the European Commission works towards a greener, more sustainable Europe.

  1. The European Commission's funding of the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission is a significant step towards achieving climate neutrality by 2030, positioning these cities as innovation hubs and promoting the wider adoption of sustainable practices in Europe by 2050.
