EU Reassessing Apple, Meta, Google Probes Under New Digital Markets Act
The European Commission is reviewing its ongoing investigations into tech giants Apple, Meta, and Google. The reassessment, led by Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager and Commissioner Thierry Breton, may result in changes or reductions in the probes launched since March 2024.
During this review, all decisions and potential fines related to the probes will be paused. The commission aims to ensure strict compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a stringent regulation targeting tech giants' market dominance. The DMA imposes tougher obligations on these companies, including stricter content moderation, fair competition, and easier consumer switching between services.
Technical work on the cases will continue despite the pause in decisions. The review could lead to adjustments in the range of probes launched since March 2024.
The European Commission's review of its probes into Apple, Meta, and Google under the DMA is expected to ensure fair competition and compliance with the act's regulations. The outcome of the review may result in changes or reductions in the ongoing investigations.
