Enhanced Trans-Caspian cargo movement records a hike of 62%

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TMTM), also known as the Middle Corridor, experienced a remarkable surge in 2024, with the volume of transportation reaching 27.4 million tons, a 62% increase compared to the previous year.

This growth is attributed to the commissioning of seven cargo handling terminals at Kazakhstan's borders, with three more recently commissioned in the airports of Almaty, Kyzylorda, and Shymkent. Five additional terminals are planned for the future, as part of the development of transport infrastructure.

The new terminals aim to strengthen delivery times, tariffs, and service quality, making the TMTM a more attractive option for international trade. The route benefits from stable tariffs that have remained unchanged for three years, and efforts to modernize infrastructure include digitalization of customs declaration processes.

Strategic cooperation among countries along the corridor, such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, is driving expansion. Discussions focus on eliminating bottlenecks, synchronizing traffic, enhancing port capacities, and accelerating rolling stock turnover, all fostering increased transit volumes.

Kazakhstan plans shipment growth through Azerbaijan, with oil transit already reaching 1.2 million tons in early 2024. Uzbekistan is also actively upgrading its infrastructure and deepening regional cooperation, including investments in logistics terminals like the $18 million facility in Georgia’s Poti Free Industrial Zone.

Forecasts indicate that transit volumes will continue to rise sharply, with Kazakhstan alone expecting volumes to grow from 33 million tons in 2025 to 54 million tons in 2026 and potentially reaching 100 million tons by 2035.

It's worth noting that the increase in the volume of transit traffic from China along the TMTM was particularly notable, with a 28-fold increase reported. However, the commissioning of the terminals in the airports of Almaty, Kyzylorda, and Shymkent was not specifically mentioned in relation to the TMTM's growth, and no information was provided about the specific types of terminals commissioned.

The press service of the Government reported the increase in the volume of transportation along the TMTM, with the news site obtaining the information from the press service. The commissioning of the terminals took place in 2024, but the press service of the Government did not provide details about the commissioning.

In summary, the TMTM's growth in 2024 is marked by a significant increase in volume, the commissioning of new terminals, stable tariffs, digitalized customs, strategic regional collaboration, and significant infrastructure investments. The route is poised for continued growth in the coming years.
