Newly Invigorated Lotus Emira Turbo SE Outshines V6 Counterpart
In a surprising twist, British automaker Lotus has elevated the performance of the entry-level four-cylinder engine in its final internal combustion model, the Emira. The boosted power now matches that of the V6, creating a Performance paradox within this sports car.
The Mercedes-AMG-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine now delivers 294 kW/400 PS in the Emira Turbo SE, equaling the output of the Emira V6's previous entry-level engine. Plus, with 480 Newton meters of torque and 93 kilograms less weight, the four-cylinder variant offers improved performance at lower consumption. Available at an entry price of 109,490 euros, it also comes with a 3,000 euro price advantage.
The "SE" in Lotus historically signifies "Special Equipment," typically an optional package. However, the Emira Turbo SE comes with the Lotus Drivers Pack as standard equipment, which includes a meticulously tuned sports suspension, upgraded cross-drilled and ventilated brake discs, and launch control. This package is complemented by gray 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels with contrasting red brake calipers and an Alcantara headliner.
Amplified Performance, Elevated Speeds
Compared to the First Edition of the Emira introduced in 2022, the AMG M139 four-cylinder engine produces 40 more horsepower and boasts a 50 Newton meter higher torque. The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is once again sourced from Affalterbach. This setup propels the Emira Turbo SE from 0 to 100 km/h in just four seconds and to a top speed of 291 km/h - a 16 km/h increase over the previous model.
Our testing of the Emira Turbo SE in Sweden revealed a remarkably low seating position in the two-seater coupe. The mid-engine position in the rear results in a steeply inclined windshield that can be hard to discern behind the steering wheel. The direct steering provides so much feedback that lane changes on the highway can be felt in the steering wheel. While this lends precision on the racetrack, it can be disconcerting on long trips.
Unyielding on the Racetrack, Reliable on the Road
The Emira Turbo SE is effortlessly manageable for amateur racers on the racetrack. The brakes remain stable even after several fast laps, and through three driving modes, the electronic driving aids can be tailored to the driver's skill level. This allows the sports car to adapt to varying experience levels effectively.
Lotus fans may still consider the Emira V6, as the larger sibling is said to be even more track-focused. Additionally, purists might prefer the manual transmission option unavailable in the turbo version, setting a distinct difference between both models.
