Enhanced IoT Connectivity: Maersk Modernizes Interconnected Network Across Its Maritime Fleet

In a giant leap towards digital innovation, shipping giant Maersk is implementing its cutting-edge IoT connectivity platform, OneWireless, across a whopping 450 vessels. This move covers all Maersk-owned vessels and more than 100 time-chartered vessels in their fleet. The platform is geared to handle the growing need for real-time data transmission and offers advanced IoT capabilities.

Kjeld Dittmann, head of vessel and cargo connectivity at Maersk, remarks, "With our next-gen connectivity platform, we will empower our customers with significant advantages, such as real-time cargo tracking, heightened supply chain visibility, and improved operational efficiency. The platform is engineered to support a multitude of IoT devices, ensuring top-notch performance for reefer tracking and fleet IoT."

Through the Captain Peter solution, Maersk customers can already monitor the temperature of their cargo, but the current 2G network on board restricts the frequency of data point updates. OneWireless addresses this issue by upgrading to 4G technology, boosting data granularity and paving the way for smarter cargo tracking and advanced operational insights.

Kjeld Dittmann explains, "Much like the consumer transition from 2G to 4G mobile networks, the OneWireless platform revolutionizes cargo communication at sea. With unprecedented speed and rock-solid reliability, we're unlocking new heights of efficiency and operational excellence to meet the demands of a connected, data-driven world."

Built for the Future of Global Trade

OneWireless is a single, unified network designed to support various wireless technologies like NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE broadband. This flexibility, scalability, and security enable Maersk customers to integrate their IoT devices and services seamlessly.

The platform is designed for seamless interoperability between private and public networks, ensuring steady cargo monitoring whether at sea, in port, or on land. This characteristic paves the way for custom BYOIoT (bring Your Own IoT) solutions based on established standards for customers.

Though the platform promises seamless performance for connected container and cargo monitoring solutions, its technology is anything but simple. It's the product of a collaboration between advanced tech partners such as Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa.

The roll-out of OneWireless is underway and is slated for completion by the first quarter of 2026. Since the upgrade involves hardware replacements aboard vessels, careful planning is essential and must be executed during scheduled port calls.

OneWireless is a comprehensive solution designed to address the distinctive challenges of maritime operations. It offers a robust, secure, and efficient IoT connectivity platform that elevates fleet management and cargo tracking to a new level.

  1. As Maersk deploys the OneWireless connectivity platform, they are set to revolutionize the business landscape of global trade, leveraging advanced data-and-cloud-computing technology to empower customers with real-time tracking, enhanced supply chain visibility, and operational efficiency.
  2. The future-proof OneWireless platform, which supports diverse wireless technologies like NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE broadband, fosters seamless integration of IoT devices and services for customers, arming businesses in the finance sector with the necessary tools to navigate the connected, data-driven world.
