Energy Storage Summit Asia 2025: Philippines Leads PHES Discussion

The Energy Storage Summit Asia 2025, currently taking place in Manila, Philippines, is discussing the region's energy storage landscape. The Philippines, an early adopter of pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) in Southeast Asia, is in the spotlight. The summit's first day focuses on the region, with keynote speakers Francis Saturnino-Juan, chair of the Philippines Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), and Bernice Garcia-Rama, VP of Meralco, leading discussions.

The 'Scaling energy storage across Asia' session explored cross-border imports and the potential of an ASEAN grid. The 'GEA-4 and the road ahead' panel delved into the country's first renewables-plus-storage auction. Francis Saturnino-Juan highlighted the Iberian blackout as an example of the need for system flexibility. Dr. Guang Yang of Hyperstrong showcased the company's latest 6.25MWh, 20-foot containerised BESS. Gabrielle Catano of NHOA noted that BESS energy densities have doubled between 2023 and 2025.

The summit, in its third edition after Singapore in 2023 and 2024, is expected to yield insights into the region's energy storage future. The Philippines' early adoption of PHES and its potential in an ASEAN grid are key topics. The event is set to influence policy and investment decisions in the region's energy storage sector.
