Energy giant TotalEnergies joins forces with NativState for a major U.S. forest carbon credit project

TotalEnergies, a leading international energy company, has entered a strategic partnership with NativState, an Arkansas-based forest carbon project developer [1][2][3][4]. The collaboration aims to conserve approximately 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) of privately owned forestlands across four southern U.S. states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

The initiative, comprising 13 Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects, involves more than 280 small private family landowners. The partnership aims to prevent land conversion and intensive timber harvesting, common in the area, by providing landowners with sustainable alternative income through carbon credit markets [1][2][3].

TotalEnergies will use the carbon credits generated by these projects, certified by the American Carbon Registry (ACR), to offset residual Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2030. The carbon credits will be generated by implementing sustainable forestry practices, such as protecting high conservation value areas, enhancing species diversity, improving streamside management, and maintaining wildlife corridors [2][3][4].

The partnership also offers social benefits by providing forestry management education and technical support to small landowners. This initiative promotes sustainable forest stewardship and economic resilience in local communities [3][4].

Stuart Allen, Founder and CEO of NativState, expressed gratitude for the partnership, stating that it has the potential to empower small forest landowners. Adrien Henry, Vice President of Nature-Based Solutions at TotalEnergies, stated, "TotalEnergies confirms its commitment to support the conservation and enhancement of carbon sinks, with local value creation."

The partnership is expected to cultivate healthier lands and stronger communities for generations to come, creating extraordinary opportunities for small forest landowners in communities across the southern United States. NativState's operations will be scaled up through this partnership, helping small forest landowners embrace sustainable forestry practices.

In addressing the challenges of global energy markets, the partnership with NativState supports TotalEnergies in its efforts to address climate change mitigation while creating a lasting legacy for small forest landowners in the southern United States.

  1. This partnership between TotalEnergies and NativState, rooted in environmental science, aims to combat climate-change by preserving biodiversity through sustainable forestry practices, while also offering financial benefits to small private family landowners in the form of carbon credit markets.
  2. The science-driven initiative, spanning four southern U.S. states, not only aims to conserve approximately 100,000 hectares of forestlands but also serves to educate landowners on sustainable forestry practices, thereby promoting environmental-science and economic resilience in local communities.
  3. In a bid to offset residual Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2030, the energy industry giant, TotalEnergies, will use the carbon credits generated by these projects, certified by the American Carbon Registry, to generate energy in a more environmentally friendly manner, thereby addressing the challenges of global energy markets and contributing to climate-change mitigation efforts.
