MN8 Energy to Build Freight EV Charging Hub in South Bronx

MN8 Energy, a leading renewable energy company based in New York, is set to build a freight electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in the South Bronx. The project, known as the Gateway to Hunts Point charging hub, will be located at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, the largest wholesale food hub in the nation.

The charging hub will feature over 40 EV chargers, tailored for freight and logistics electric trucks, and a 10,000 square foot welcome center. The welcome center will serve drivers and workforce training programs, reflecting a strategic emphasis on preparing local workers for jobs in EV infrastructure and freight logistics.

The hub will also include workforce development facilities, such as The Bolt, a center aimed at training 420 commercial drivers over three years. This initiative is expected to create 46 full-time and part-time jobs through partner organizations.

The charging facilities will be accessible 24/7 and will offer reservation systems and customer support. The hub will have 42 EV charging plugs for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, including 32 DC fast charging plugs with power capacities from 180 to 360 kW. Additionally, it will feature 10 Level 2 charging plugs, e-bike and e-scooter charging stations, a community solar installation, and the workforce development center, The Bolt.

MN8 Energy has collaborated with Mercedes-Benz to develop the nationwide Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging network. The South Bronx charging hub will be part of this network. Operations for the hub are expected to commence by 2029.

The South Bronx charging hub project is part of MN8 Energy's commitment to building sustainable infrastructure that sparks economic development and brings environmental solutions to communities. The project aims to support the transition to cleaner freight transportation, reduce emissions in a historically industrial and pollution-burdened area like Hunts Point, and help New York City meet ambitious climate and transportation electrification goals.

In addition, the project is expected to enhance local economic growth through job creation in EV infrastructure construction, maintenance, and logistics workforce training. It also aims to improve air quality and build a more equitable clean energy future for the Hunts Point community.

The Gateway to Hunts Point FDC facility will support over 15,000 daily truck trips delivering fresh meat, fish, and produce to the New York City metropolitan area. Michael Miller, Distributed Energy Solutions Manager at MN8 Energy, stated that the company's experience with leading Fortune 500 clients provides the technical expertise and operational excellence needed for the South Bronx charging hub project. Construction for the hub is scheduled to begin in 2027.
