Employees of Volkswagen in large numbers opt for part-time absences

Get the lowdown on Volkswagen's restructuring plans, including their comprehensive savings program and severance terms.

In an attempt to boost competitiveness, Volkswagen is aiming to slash tens of thousands of jobs by 2030. So far, they've managed to secure a reduction of around 20,000 jobs, with the majority of employees agreeing to job cuts. According to personnel director Gunnar Kilian, "Around 20,000 departures from the company by 2030 are already contractually agreed."

The VW group is offering early retirement, age regulations, and severance agreements as part of their comprehensive restructuring to reduce indirect personnel costs. Employees opting for early retirement or age regulations won't receive additional severance. Bild newspaper reports that about two-thirds are going for early retirement.

The amount of severance paid—up to 400,000 euros, according to Bild—is dependent on length of service with the automaker. Volkswagen is confident they'll reach their goal of cutting 35,000 jobs in Germany by 2030, with the next step focusing on the large birth cohorts of 1969 and 1970. In total, more than a quarter of the 130,000 jobs are set to go.

There's still a ways to go on the savings course, according to brand finance director David Powels, who points out there's "a lot of work ahead of us for the future." The goal is to make Volkswagen competitive and future-proof by 2029.
