Election Commission of India Boosts Compensation for Polling Station Staff, okays Additional Rs 6,000 Reward for Superintendent of Indelible Ink
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced significant changes in the remuneration of its electoral roll machinery, aiming to recognise the hard work of these individuals and ensure the preparation and revision of electoral rolls are carried out impartially and transparently.
From July 23, 2025, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in India will receive an updated remuneration of ₹12,000 per year, a doubling of their previous rates last revised in 2015. BLO Supervisors, too, have seen their remuneration enhanced to ₹18,000 per year.
In addition to the increased regular remuneration, BLOs will now receive a ₹2,000 incentive for participating in roll revisions and up to ₹6,000 for special intensive revision. This is a new development, aimed at further motivating BLOs to contribute to the electoral process.
The ECI's decisions extend beyond BLOs. For the first time, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) will now receive an honorarium. EROs will receive ₹30,000, while AEROs will receive ₹25,000.
The ECI's statement emphasises its commitment to adequately compensate election personnel at the field level, who play a significant role in the preparation of impartial and transparent electoral rolls. The decisions are part of an ongoing effort to recognise the hard work of the electoral roll machinery.
The ECI's decision was announced in a press release and has been widely reported and reinforced from August 1–3, 2025[1][2][3][4]. The changes are expected to have a positive impact on the electoral process, as the commission seeks to ensure the preparation and revision of electoral rolls are carried out with the utmost accuracy and transparency.
