Restarting Service for Elbe Ferry 'Tanja' - Elbe Ferry "Tanja" to Resume Temporary Suspension

In the Lüneburg district, low water levels in the Elbe and Weser rivers have caused a disruption to regular ferry services, affecting hundreds of commuters who rely on these ferries for crossing the rivers.

The Elbe ferry "Tanja", which normally carries around 500 vehicles daily, will pause operations from Monday, joining the Poller ferry over the Weser in the Holzminden district, which stopped operating on Wednesday due to similar low water levels. The district does not expect the Weser ferry to resume operations before the end of the month.

As alternatives, commuters can utilise train services connecting major hubs. For instance, travelers can return from Hamburg to Magdeburg by train in about three hours. For groups of four or more people, minibus transfers are available on request, providing a convenient substitute when ferry crossings are not possible.

The "Amt Neuhaus" ferry between Bleckede and Neu Bleckede is running regularly and available as an alternative. Another option is the ferry running between Darchau and Neu Darchau banks.

The responsible parties had tried to ensure sufficient depth with dredgers at the beginning of the week, but to no avail. The region is currently discussing the acquisition of a new ferry or the construction of a bridge to alleviate the ongoing issue.

District councilor Rainer Müller has stated that the ferry pauses will cause significant inconvenience and strain for commuters and students. Students who usually use the ferry will have to switch to emergency buses. Those affected are advised to check ferry departures on Monday morning.

The district urges those affected to remain patient as they work towards finding a long-term solution to the issue. In the meantime, commuters are encouraged to explore the alternative transportation options available to them.
