Egypt's Elections: Candidates Prioritize Environment for First Time

Egypt's upcoming parliamentary elections are witnessing a significant shift, with candidates from various parties, including The Nour Party, The Green Party of Egypt, and Freedom Egypt Party, prioritizing environmental issues. This marks a first in the country's political landscape.

Gameela Ismail, a candidate from The Nour Party, is advocating for new urban planning strategies that emphasize green public spaces and reduce concrete buildings along the Nile. She believes that addressing water pollution, industrial complexes, and promoting clean energy are key to environmental protection.

Magy Mahrous, another candidate, proposes restructuring the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs to enforce regulations and supports renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, Mahmoud Salem advocates for replacing wasteful irrigation systems, removing energy subsidies, and relocating industrial zones to protect citizens from pollution.

The Green Party of Egypt, founded in 1990, has historically struggled to gain influence but is now campaigning on 'scientific solutions implemented politically'. Their priorities include water conservation, renewable energy, and environmental education. Freedom Egypt Party, established in 2011, has developed a long-term environmental program focusing on water management, agriculture, waste management, climate change, and conservation.

The inclusion of environmental issues in candidates' platforms signals a growing awareness and concern among Egyptians. Candidates like Gameela Ismail, Magy Mahrous, and Mahmoud Salem are leading the charge, focusing on water use, air pollution, agriculture, energy, and urban planning. As Egypt heads to the polls, voters will have the opportunity to choose representatives who prioritize environmental sustainability, a crucial factor for a higher quality of life and happiness.
