Dusseldorf: Two Cycling Paths Installed at Grafenberg Location

In the heart of Grafenberg, Düsseldorf, a significant infrastructure project is underway to transform Limburgstraße and Gutenbergstraße into bike-friendly roads. The project, which commenced on May 5th and is expected to continue until 2026, aims to strengthen cycling, make route guidance safer, and separate pedestrian and cycling traffic.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection is contributing 287,500 euros to the project costs, with the total costs approximated at 710,000 euros. Work on the intersection of Böcklinstraße/Gutenbergstraße will begin, with curb sections moved forward to improve sightlines and a new pedestrian crossing created.

Along Limburgstraße, a continuous 4-meter wide bike lane will be created, while Gutenbergstraße will have a continuous 3.50-meter wide bike lane. Between Heinzelmännchenweg and Limburgstraße, a new three-meter wide two-way bike lane will be established. A notable addition at the underpass of Grafenberger Allee will be a 2.50-meter wide two-way bike lane and an equally wide sidewalk with tactile elements.

Sidewalks will be exclusively for pedestrians after the construction work, with official signage, large bike lane pictograms, red markings, and dashed wide lines added. Motorists must maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters when overtaking cyclists.

Additionally, Böcklinstraße between Burgmüllerstraße and Gutenbergstraße will be designated as a dead end, with a detour signposted for pedestrians and cyclists. Parking is prohibited, except in designated areas. Children under 8 years may use the sidewalk if needed. A new pedestrian crossing will also be established on Limburgstraße.

The project prioritises cyclists throughout the route, and cyclists may ride side by side. After the establishment of the bike lanes, motorized individual traffic will still be allowed as local traffic but must reduce speed and not overtake cyclists.

Counts conducted during the same period showed 1,276 cyclists on Gutenbergstraße, 1,203 on the sidewalk, and 205 motor vehicles, while on Limburgstraße, 1,222 cyclists and 379 motor vehicles were counted between 6 and 22 hours, with many cyclists using the sidewalk.
