Disruption on Main Commuter Route to Munich Lasts for Weeks: Crucial Information for Passengers
The Deutsche Bahn is currently undertaking a significant renovation of the train route between Munich and Mühldorf, with a focus on modernizing the interior of regional train line RB40[1]. This renovation, which began in August 2025, will impact passengers traveling between these two cities.
Unfortunately, the exact resumption date for regular train service on this route has not been publicly announced yet. However, during the closure, Deutsche Bahn will provide bus services as a replacement for the cancelled trains.
Between Muhldorf, Ampfing, and Messestadt Ost, direct buses operate. These buses from Muhldorf to Munich Ost or Friedenstr. stop at all intermediate stations. Passengers traveling between Messestadt Ost and Munich Ost or Munich Hauptbahnhof should use the U-Bahn line 2 of the MVG as a replacement. Buses depart from Messestadt Ost at Willy-Brandt-Allee, platform 5.
Between Dorfen and Messestadt Ost, direct buses also operate. It's essential to note that buses from Munich to Muhldorf only stop in Ampfing for exiting.
The modernization of signal box technology is the reason for the train closure between Munich and Mühldorf. The renovation will result in significant restrictions in train traffic. The first electronic signal boxes at Hörlkopfen and Thann-Matzbach will be in operation by the end of 2025, replacing the last four mechanical signal boxes.
In a second construction phase, Schwindegg and Weidenbach/Heldenstein will follow. This modern electronic signal box technology (ESTW) is expected to improve the overall efficiency and safety of the train route.
For precise and up-to-date information, it is recommended to check DB’s official website or contact their customer service directly. It's crucial to plan your journey accordingly during this renovation period to ensure a smooth travel experience.
