Disruption in Gaza: Transport, railway services, and schools halted on September 22nd
Italy Announces Nationwide Strike on Monday in Response to Gaza Crisis
A national strike has been called for Monday, September 22, in Italy, involving various sectors including railways, transport, schools, universities, and ports, in response to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The union, Cgil, has urged the Italian government to recognise the Palestinian state and halt arms shipments and commercial agreements. The union's leader, Maurizio Landini, believes that the Italian government's ambiguity and lack of action in the Gaza crisis makes them complicit in the ongoing situation.
In the rail sector, Trenitalia Calabria, Captrain Italia, and Gts Rail will be exempt from the strike. Daily and administrative staff in the rail sector, including FS Group personnel, Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, and Trenord, will adhere to the national strike from 00:00 to 23:00 on Monday.
Trains may be canceled or changed, but there will be guaranteed time slots: from 6:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00. The complete list of guaranteed trains can be consulted on the Trenitalia website.
Firefighters will strike for 4 hours from 9:00 to 13:00. The strike for local public transport, maritime, goods, and logistics will last 24 hours, but with different modalities. Some local public transport companies will be exempted from the strike, including ATC, Riccitelli and Trotta bus (La Spezia), AUTOLINEE TOSCANE spa (Pisa and Province), Umbria Region's TPL companies, GEST Firenze, AUTOLINEE TOSCANE spa (Firenze, Prato, Pistoia), ARST spa (Provinces: Sassari, Nuoro, Cagliari, Oristano), Amat Spa Palermo, NET NORD EST TRASPORTI (Monza and Brianza), Conerobus, MOM spa (Treviso), Paolo Scoppio Autolinee - school transport - Comune di Bari.
The port sector mobilization is scheduled for the entire day. For taxis, the strike will start from 00.00 to 23.59. The teaching and ATA staff of the Education and Research sector have been involved in the strike.
Many universities have organized sit-ins and protests, and student collectives will also join the mobilization day. For highways, the strike will be from 22:00 on September 21 to 22:00 on September 22.
The aviation-aerospace-industry sector will not be affected by the strike, as work stoppages have already been declared for September 26. Confsai, Cisle, Conalpe, and public and private sector teachers will cross their arms to show their support on Monday.
The demonstration is in response to the genocide taking place in the Gaza Strip, the blocking of humanitarian aid by the Israeli army, and threats against the Global Sumud Flotilla. The organization that made an appeal to the Italian cabinet on Monday, September 22, urging recognition of Palestinian statehood and to refrain from arms deliveries and trade agreements is not explicitly named in the provided search results.
