Disrupted Flyer Deliveries by Canada Post Affecting Winnipeg Businesses
In a surprising turn of events, small businesses across Canada are feeling the brunt of an ongoing labor dispute between Canada Post and its union. The halt in flyer delivery, including community newspapers, is causing disruption to advertising efforts, particularly for businesses like The Pizza Oven on Henderson Highway.
The decision not to deliver flyers, including community newspapers, is an attempt by the union to get Canada Post back to the bargaining table. However, this job action is impacting businesses like The Pizza Oven, owned by Ishan Singla, who heavily relied on flyers to draw in customers for pizza slices. Approximately 20% of The Pizza Oven's customers were attracted by the flyers, providing them with the address, menu, and deals.
Flyers were an essential marketing tool for The Pizza Oven's business growth. Similarly, Re/Max real estate agent Stacey Burrows uses post cards to sell her business. Canada Post delivers these post cards for Stacey, and approximately half of her businesses were built because of them.
Community newspapers, which contain news stories, ads, and public service announcements, provide fact-based research, journalism, and information that people need. Mark Buss, president of Clipper Publishing and the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association, stated that community newspapers are not junk mail.
Canada Post is disappointed with the union's decision and urges the union to come back with "workable solutions." The stoppage of flyer delivery is part of a job action related to the ongoing labor dispute between the union and Canada Post. The halt in flyer delivery could interrupt local news delivery as well.
As the labor dispute continues, small businesses like The Pizza Oven and Re/Max real estate agent Stacey Burrows are left searching for alternative marketing strategies to maintain their customer base and grow their businesses.
