Decline in Employment Levels Persists Once More

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported a decrease in employment in Germany's third quarter of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. The number of employed persons dropped by 1.4 percent, representing a loss of 654,000 people.

Usually, the third quarter of a year sees an increase in employment, but this year, the growth was significantly lower than the average of the last five years (+0.5 percent, +240,000 persons). This decline is a continuation of the trend that began in the second quarter of 2020 (-1.4 percent).

However, compared to the exceptionally strong decline in the second quarter of 2020 (-1.4 percent, -627,000 persons), the decrease in the third quarter was a significant slowdown. Without seasonal adjustment, the number of employed persons increased by 0.1 percent or 66,000 persons compared to the previous quarter.

After seasonal adjustment, the number of employed persons decreased by 48,000 or 0.1 percent compared to the second quarter of 2020. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, the number of employed persons decreased by 1.5 percent or 688,000 persons after seasonal adjustment.

The industrial sectors with the strongest workforce decline in the third quarter of 2020 were primarily the automotive industry and related metal and electrical engineering industries, which together lost over 250,000 jobs compared to pre-crisis 2019 levels, with especially sharp reductions in automotive.

In the third quarter of 2020, around 44.7 million people were employed in Germany. The number of employed persons in the third quarter of 2020 was around 44.7 million people.

This decrease in employment is a significant slowdown compared to the exceptionally strong decline in the second quarter of 2020. The Federal Statistical Office will continue to monitor the employment situation closely as the country navigates through the ongoing pandemic.
