Debut Run of the Supra Final Edition on the Racing Circuit

Cars fans, brace yourself, the era of the iconic Toyota Supra is about to end, at least for now. Before the Supra's assembly lines kick it to the curb, Toyota decides to appease the disheartened fans with the passionate Final Edition. ntv.de took a ride in this senior generation.

People can argue about the Supra all they want—it's too much like the BMW and all that nonsense. But one fact remains, its retirement will leave a considerable void in Toyota's model lineup. And that, my friend, hurts. So, Toyota attempts to console the fans—and make some extra dough along the way—with the Final Edition. Splashing an extra 101 ponies into its robust inline-six, the Final Edition now boasts a whopping 441 DIN horses (340 horsepower for the standard variant). However, it'll cost you an additional €63,850 compared to the Lightweight version, ringing in at €142,800.

So, what do you get for that hefty price tag? More than you expect, and Toyota lets third parties take the wheel—but not on the open road, instead, inviting us to put the Final Edition through its paces on the race track at Parcmotor in Castellolí. But first, a warm-up with the Lightweight Evo.

The term "Lightweight" may seem ironic here, as the Evo, like the Legend version, weighs a beefy 1570 kg. However, the engineers have beefed up the sleek coupe with a double-bubble roof and racing charisma, sporting enlarged brakes, achy dampers, and robust stabilizers to set lap records. But let's cut to the chase—to the throbbing engine under the hood.

This inline-six growls nicely as the revs climb, but it may not be as thrilling as the Supra's chassis, which boasts a well-balanced 50:50 weight distribution. The circuit's corners come fast and furious, with a short straight in between, making this the perfect playground to test the Supra's power and agility. I'm no track pro, but I manage to push the Supra hard, taking some corners with excess gusto, witnessing the stability control save the day when the rear end threatens to break free. And then, on the final aggressive bend, speeding up to 200 km/h before hitting the hard brakes.

Now, it's time for the Final Edition—the finished masterpiece. Coated in a matte black, it commands attention with its colossal carbon spoiler on the rear deck. The famed suspension company KW has optimized its suspension, offering 16 unique compression settings and 12 for rebound, making certain the Final Edition excels in lateral dynamics for diverse track layouts. The engineers have mined the expertise of the customer racing version, Supra GT4, yielding an additional crossmember in the trunk and even more robust stabilizers. A modified rear differential control, a revised steering system with particularly direct tuning, and adjusted caster angles front and rear round off the package.

Low-key racers like me are fascinated by the B58 engine with tweaked intake and a fine-tuned engine control. And the Akrapovič exhaust system with titanium end muffler certainly doesn't disappoint. But, alas, the instructor spoils the fun by refusing to let us push beyond 180 km/h on the straightaway—a temporary setback for the Track Gods, no doubt.

The Limited Edition beast, pumped up to 571 Nm of torque, delivers a resounding thump when you step on it. While other civilian electric drives dish out 300 PS or more, the standard Supra A90 appears almost underpowered. The Supra A90's demise is inevitable, and fans will need to say their goodbyes. Here's hoping Toyota doesn't leave this gap unfilled.
