A ghastly train derailment in Bavaria three years ago left five people dead and dozens injured. Recently, the responsible federal agency revealed their final report, outlining sub-par maintenance management and internal communication issues as primary culprits.

Blame for the fatal Garmisch-Partenkirchen train crash lies heavily on the railway's lack of concern for the upkeep of its railway sleepers and internal communication failures, according to the final report published by the Federal Railway Authority (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt, EBA) on the disaster’s third anniversary.

Shockingly, a tram driver's report on the upcoming disaster site went unheeded. The EBA heavily criticizes the insufficient monitoring of older sleepers' maintenance at the time of the crash.

On June 3, 2022, a regional train derailed near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, during midday, killing four women and a 13-year-old. Seventy-eight people were wounded, some severely. The criminal investigation into the catastrophe is ongoing, with two railway employees facing accusations of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm. As of now, a trial date has yet to be set.

In its interim reports, the EBA highlighted decaying railway sleepers as the main cause of the accident. Now, the final report states that an adapted procedure for detecting internal sleepers damage caused by chemical processes in older sleepers could have likely prevented the incident.

Since the incident, Deutsche Bahn has already put various measures into action and exchanged over 1.7 million sleepers. In response, an internal and external expert circle has been established by Deutsche Bahn to explore further preventive measures for sleeper maintenance.

The maintenance monitoring regulations have been tightened, and stricter criteria now apply for classifying damaged sleepers. Deutsche Bahn expressed its condolences to the deceased's families and all those affected by the tragedy.
