Customs Seize 60 Pigeons, Impose €1,800 Duties on Driver
Customs officers in Singen intercepted a Romanian minivan carrying 60 breeding birds, imposing import duties of over 1,800 euros on the driver. The seizure order restricted the birds' movement until the duties were settled.
The driver, who remains unnamed, claimed to have collected the birds from a Swiss breeder in Stühlingen. Among the birds were 17 from the UK, destined for Romania. However, the driver could not present valid import documents or proof of the birds' value, leading to the seizure.
Officers from the Main Customs Office Singen stopped the vehicle, preventing the driver from selling, breeding, or competing with the birds until the duties were paid. Despite the restrictions, the driver was allowed to transport the birds to the recipient in Hamburg under close supervision.
The case has been forwarded to the Main Customs Office Karlsruhe for further criminal investigation. The seizure order remains in effect, ensuring the birds cannot be used or traded until the import duties are settled.
