Customs Seize 60 Breeding Pigeons Worth Thousands in Singen
Customs officers in Singen intercepted a Romanian transporter carrying 53 breeding pigeons from Switzerland and 17 from the UK. The driver, a 31-year-old Romanian, was transporting them to a breeder in Hamburg. However, he was unable to present valid import documents for any of the animals, leading to a seizure order and tax evasion proceedings.
The driver estimated the value of the pigeons at just two euros each, significantly lower than industry-standard selling prices of 100 to 300 euros per animal. Despite the low valuation, customs officers imposed import duties of over 1,800 euros due to the illegal sale and tax declaration violations.
The driver claimed to have taken over the pigeons from a Swiss breeder on a parking lot in Stühlingen. However, the lack of valid import documents raised suspicions. The criminal proceedings have been forwarded to the Main Customs Office Karlsruhe for further processing. The seizure order prohibits the sale, breeding, or competition participation of the pigeons until the duties are fully paid. The driver was unable to pay the duties, and the customs office allowed the transport to Hamburg under strict conditions.
The seizure of the breeding pigeons highlights the importance of proper documentation and compliance with import regulations. The case serves as a reminder that underestimating the value of goods can still result in significant financial penalties. The competent regional courts will now decide on the criminal proceedings against the Romanian driver.
