Customs Crackdown on Labour Law Violations in German Hotels and Catering

Customs officers in Germany have conducted a major operation targeting suspected labour law violations in the hotel and catering industry. Around 60 officers were deployed across Koblenz, Mainz, and Trier, questioning over 170 people and inspecting numerous businesses.

The operation, led by the Financial Control Black Work of the Customs (FKS), took place on September 19, 2025. It focused on ensuring compliance with the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG), which came into effect on January 1, 2025, setting the general minimum wage at €12.82 per hour.

During the inspections, officers initiated 17 criminal proceedings and 46 administrative offence proceedings. Most of these were for violations of residence regulations. However, many cases requiring further investigation were identified, including suspected minimum wage non-compliance and immigration regulation breaches. Extensive follow-up inspections will be conducted to verify employee data and check business records.

The customs authorities, committed to combating black work, have shown their dedication to enforcing labour laws in the hotel and catering industry. The operation in Koblenz, Mainz, and Trier highlights their ongoing efforts to ensure fair employment practices and protect workers' rights.
