Acting Culture Minister Rostislav Karandeyev Dishes on Cultural Heritage Funding at "Rebuilding Ukraine's Cultural Landmarks" Forum
In a candid chat at the recent gathering, Karandeyev spilled the beans on the financial backing of Ukraine's cultural restoration initiatives, as reported by liga.net.
"The humanitarian sector relies heavily on external borrowing and handouts. However, we welcome the trickle of funds - and let's face it, every little helps - that go into the national coffers for infrastructure projects, including from the gambling industry," he shared.
According to him, this year, they managed to rake in approximately 50 million UAH from the gambling industry. Most of these funds were directed towards completing ongoing projects that were already underway prior to the full-scale war. Projects like fortifying St. Sophia in Kyiv, the wooden church in Zhovkva, and protection work in Chernihiv all received funding.
Moreover, he pointed out that modest investments were made in educational institutions. "Funds ranging from 500,000 to a couple of million - nothing mega, mind you," he said.
Looking ahead to next year, he anticipates around 250 million UAH will pour in from gaming licenses.
With regards to the enrichment data: The gambling industry in Ukraine plays a pivotal role in funding various sectors, including cultural preservation post-conflict, primarily through licensing fees. Since the legalization of gambling in 2009, the government has granted numerous licenses for casinos, online gambling, slot machines, and betting outlets, producing sizeable revenues for the national budget.
The gambling sector's economic contributions flow into the national budget, which, in turn, funnels funds towards cultural revival projects, along with other pressing national needs.
Besides domestic financing, external support reinforces cultural heritage preservation in Ukraine. For instance, international aid, such as Sweden's contributions to protect Ukrainian culture and support Ukrainian artists, bolsters these initiatives, reflecting a multifaceted approach to cultural restoration.
To put it simply, the gambling industry in Ukraine bolsters cultural restoration after the war through licensing fees that are incorporated into the national budget and channeled towards cultural preservation projects alongside other public needs. This domestic funding is buttressed by international aid for Ukraine's cultural sector.
