Cristina Álvarez Defense Denies Key Allegations in Embezzlement Case
The defense in the Cristina Álvarez case has presented its arguments, denying key allegations. It maintains that Álvarez's role was administrative assistance, not exclusive to her, and that Begoná Gómez did not participate in her appointment or payment. The defense has also appealed Judge Juan Carlos Peinado's decision to refer the case to a jury trial.
The defense contests the accusations that Cristina Álvarez managed private matters for Begoná Gómez, as suggested by emails between Álvarez and the Universidad Complutense's vice-rector. It argues that these emails were a 'one-time help' and did not involve any financial gain for Álvarez.
The defense further rejects the notion that Begoná Gómez, as the spouse of the President of the Government, can be considered a 'public official' for the purposes of committing the crime of embezzlement. It argues that there is 'no factual basis' for imputing this crime in Álvarez's appointment as an advisor to Moncloa.
The defense's arguments challenge the core allegations in the case. The popular accusations have requested the investigation of President Pedro Sánchez and Minister Félix Bolaños as witnesses, and the assets of Cristina Álvarez since her appointment in July 2018.
