Hong Kong Court Temporarily Blocks Discharge of Bankrupt former Feng Shui Master Peter Chan

In a recent development, the Hong Kong High Court has temporarily blocked the automatic discharge of Peter Chan Chun-chuen, a former feng shui master, from bankruptcy. The court's decision comes after objections were raised by the trustees overseeing Chan's bankruptcy.

The bankruptcy order was imposed on Chan in 2021 due to his conviction for forging the will of late tycoon Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum. As a result, Chan was found guilty of failing to pay approximately HK$28.4 million (about US$3.6 million) in legal fees owed to the Chinachem Charitable Foundation, related to his conviction.

The trustees managing Chan's assets have requested the court to maintain his bankruptcy status, opposing his automatic discharge, as his debts remain unsettled. The official receiver, acting as liquidator and provisional trustee, has also requested a short adjournment to prepare submissions before the court hearing.

Master Jack Wong Kin-tong, the presiding judge, ordered a temporary suspension of Chan's discharge from the bankruptcy order. The court has scheduled a further hearing for September 8, 2025, to hear more arguments on the matter.

Chan himself was absent from the recent hearing, and the identities of the trustees opposing the discharge were not disclosed during the brief session. The government arm is involved in the case as the official receiver.

In light of these developments, Chan's automatic discharge from the bankruptcy order, which was scheduled for next week, has been delayed pending further legal consideration of the creditors' objections. No valid objection was raised by Chan's creditors before Tuesday of next week.

In 2007, Chan claimed to be the lover of late tycoon Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum, but his relationship with the tycoon remains a subject of controversy. The court will hear further arguments on September 8 regarding Chan's bankruptcy status.

  1. The temporary blocking of Peter Chan's automatic discharge from bankruptcy has raised questions in the general-news sector, as it involves a former feng shui master convicted of financial crimes.
  2. The ongoing court case of Peter Chan, a former feng shui master, is not just a matter of crime-and-justice; it also has significant implications for the business world, as his debts totaling millions of dollars remain unsettled.
