County Derry situated alongside Lough Foyle
In the picturesque landscape of County Derry, a new architectural gem has emerged, offering stunning views of Lough Foyle, Binevenagh Mountain, and the Donegal Mountains. The house, designed by Marshall McCann Architects, has been hailed as a testament to energy-efficient homes and has won the prestigious House of the Year award in Ireland.
The design of the house was inspired by the rural environment and the pattern of existing built structures on the site. It mimics the haphazard scattering of rural buildings in the area, creating a harmonious streetscape with an existing stone barn. The house seamlessly blends into the surrounding landscape, with its agricultural style and use of typical rural materials.
The main contractor on the project, Niall Gribbin of Setana Construction, is proud to have been a part of this innovative build. He believes the house indicates a positive direction towards energy-efficient homes. The house was constructed following Passive House principles, making it energy efficient and air tight.
The house's design evolved from an 'Irish Long House' to an agricultural shed, with lean-to outhouses arranged around the main shed-like structure. The owner of the villa, architect Alan Jones, was awarded Single House Building of the Year in 2019, overlooking Lough Foyle in County Derry.
The house's energy efficiency is evident in the client's expected annual heating bill of between £200-300, a significant reduction from their previous build. The construction took seven months to complete, and the house was built using agricultural materials to ensure its authenticity and harmony with the surrounding environment.
The house's design was praised for its thoughtful consideration of agricultural buildings, materials, and colours. It is situated behind the cottage, offering a charming rural backdrop. The award-winning house has become a beacon of sustainable and energy-efficient architecture in County Derry.
