Costco is strongly resisting the anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative.
Major corporations like Walmart, John Deere, and Tractor Supply are either revising or leaving behind diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. On the contrary, Costco stands firm in its belief that DEI enhances its "bargain hunt" shopping environment and continues to support its initiatives.
Costco's board of directors strongly advises shareholders to reject a proposal put forth by the conservative-oriented think tank, the National Center for Public Policy Research. This proposal urged Costco to assess and disclose the potential financial risks associated with upholding its diversity and inclusion objectives. The group alleged potential "unlawful discrimination" against employees categorized as "white, Asian, male, or straight."
The National Center for Public Policy Research did not promptly respond to CNN's request for comment.
Costco boasts a chief diversity officer and a supplier program dedicated to nurturing small and diverse enterprises. Additionally, it offers financial aid to organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which serves underrepresented minorities.
Costco attributes its DEI initiatives to bolstering employee recruitment and retention, improving retail offerings and services, and satisfying customer preferences for an assorted workforce. Costco also believes its members enjoy interacting with a diverse staff in its warehouses.
"Diverse employee groups contribute fresh ideas and creativity to our product offerings, thereby enriching the 'bargain hunt' experience valued by our customers," Costco stated in its investor proxy. "Our member feedback indicates that many appreciate witnessing themselves mirrored in our warehouse employees."
The board's recommendation to vote against the proposal escalated, labeling the think tank as concealing its true anti-diversity motives beneath the pretext of risk reduction. Costco asserts that the NCPPR imposes difficulties on companies with DEI challenges, and its objective is to eradicate diversity programs altogether.
"The proponent feigns concern over legal and financial hazards to the company and its shareholders arising from diversity initiatives," the company explained. "However, the presentation unveils that it is the proponent and their allies who are inflicting burdens on companies with their challenges to established diversity programs. The proponent's ultimate goal is not to mitigate risks for the company but to annihilate diversity initiatives."
Costco unveiled the proxy document earlier this month, but it attracted attention on social media this week.
Although there isn't a single consensus definition for DEI, it typically encompasses employee education, employee resource networks, and recruiting practices designed to advance the representation of diverse groups including individuals of different races, genders, social classes, people with disabilities, veterans, and others.
The shareholder resolution argues that Costco's DEI practices may be discriminatory. However, Costco asserts that its policies are in line with the law and are non-discriminatory.
Costco, offering some of the highest wages in retail and recognized for progressive employment practices, is championing DEI amidst an escalating wave of criticisms from right-wing activists, legal organizations, conservative customers, and the incoming Trump administration.
Most businesses are not entirely abandoning DEI, but many are tweaking the terminology from "DEI" to "inclusion" or "belonging" to bypass pressure. Companies are also underplaying their DEI efforts compared to their prominence in 2020 and 2021.
The shareholder resolution accused Costco's DEI practices of being discriminatory, but Costco firmly denied these allegations, asserting that its policies are in line with the law and non-discriminatory. Despite some corporations revising or leaving behind their DEI policies, Costco remains committed to its diversity efforts, believing they enhance its business operations and customer satisfaction.
Costco's commitment to DEI extends beyond its workforce, as it also supports small and diverse businesses through its supplier program and provides financial aid to organizations representing underrepresented minorities.
