In the heart of Lower Saxony, Germany, one of the country's most significant medical facilities, University Medicine Göttingen, is undergoing a substantial transformation. Known for its high density of top-class research institutions, particularly in Göttingen, the medical centre is set to become one of the most modern clinic complexes in Germany.

Construction of the University Medicine Göttingen is progressing as planned, with the first phase, named "Niko", already underway since the start of the year. This phase is slated for completion in 2029, with operations scheduled to commence in 2030.

The second construction phase will bring a parent-child center with 172 beds, including 50 intensive care beds, and six operating rooms. Two helicopter landing pads will be built on the roof of the new University Medicine Göttingen, ensuring efficient emergency response.

The project is a significant investment, with approximately 1.1 billion euros earmarked for its entire construction. To stabilize the area for the construction of the new eight-story building, a total of 650 piles, up to 40 meters deep, will be driven into the construction site.

In addition to expanding clinical facilities, the project aims to enhance research infrastructure and integrate advanced technologies to support precision medicine and digital health. The new building will also feature cutting-edge research labs, clinical trial centers, and patient care units designed to complement Göttingen’s strengths in neurology, oncology, and AI diagnostics.

Minister of Science Falko Mohrs has made statements regarding the progress of the project, highlighting its central role in healthcare not just in Lower Saxony but beyond. The state of Lower Saxony has created a special fund for this project, which will also finance the new building of the Medical School Hannover.

By the end of the year, around 10,000 truckloads of earth will be removed from the construction site. The foundation for the second construction phase is scheduled for 2026.

The SPD party, as stated earlier, is supporting the construction of University Medicine Göttingen, reflecting a commitment to modernizing and expanding medical capabilities in the region. With its innovative approach to medical research and the promise of state-of-the-art facilities, the expansion of University Medicine Göttingen is an exciting development in the world of healthcare.
