High-Five for the A72 Upgrade: The Finish Line is Just Around the Corner!
"Progress on resurrecting A72project, dormant for more than two decades, is almost at a close" - Construction of A72 project, delayed for over two decades, gradually nears completion.
Hey there, highway enthusiasts!
The long-awaited A72 highway extension linking Leipzig and Chemnitz is finally gearing up for the final stretch. According to a bigwig from the Federal Highway Bureau, traffic between Leipzig and Chemnitz should be able to cruise the completed highway from the Leipzig interchange to Zwenkau junction as early as this summer[1]! This last piece of the puzzle marks the end of the project. Current traffic to Chemnitz is still lumbering along on temporary lanes in the opposite direction.
The Federal Highway Bureau reveals that the project is progressing right on schedule. They're gunning for the official completion of the joining with the A38 in both directions and all lanes by 2026[1]. However, some further tinkering will still be necessary, like slapping on a special noise-damping asphalt.
The 162-kilometer-long road connection from the Bavarian Vogtland through staggering Chemnitz to vibrant Leipzig has been under construction in phases since 2003. Even though the last section before Rötha in the Leipzig district all the way to the A38 south of Leipzig gave builders a run for their money, as a large chunk of the route runs over open-cast coal mining grounds. The ground was painstakingly fortified for the highway construction.
