Comprehensive Assessment of 2024 Mitsubishi Triton: Features, Performance, and Value for Money

The all-new Mitsubishi Triton roars into Australian showrooms this month, set to take on the dominating vehicles in the market, the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Isuzu D-Max.

Despite a price hike of up to $6900 compared to its previous model, the 2025 Mitsubishi Triton boasts significant updates, including a boosted braked towing capacity of 3500kg, increased cabin space, and a higher payload. It also welcomes influential driver assistance technology and levels of comfort that will cater to private buyers, tradespeople, and fleets alike.

Powered by a potent 2.4-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission, this beast of an engine produces 150kW and a flexible 470Nm. Capable of managing urban driving and rugged off-road terrain with equal ease, it's a force to be reckoned with on the roads.

Mitsubishi stands tall with their industry-leading 10-year warranty and Australia's second-largest dealer network, ensuring comprehensive after-sales coverage for owners.

This new Triton comes packed with features, including a user-friendly touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging, and Apple CarPlay. Equipped with Super Select 4WD-II, the Triton is ready to conquer any terrain you throw at it.

Price:

The 2025 Mitsubishi Triton range is available from $43,690 for the entry-level 4x2 GLX variant, scaling up to the top-tier 4x4 GSR, priced at $63,840. All new models incorporate a powerful 150kW 2.4-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. More affordable club chassis models and manual gearboxes are forthcoming in the latter half of the year.

Warranty:

The Mitsubishi Triton boasts a five-year, 100,000km warranty that is extended to a 10-year/200,000km warranty if serviced at a Mitsubishi dealership. One year of roadside assistance is standard, which grows to four years with four years of coverage when serviced at a franchised dealer.

Servicing:

Mitsubishi offers a capped-price service plan valid for ten years, with pricing slightly reduced over the period compared to the outgoing model. The savings are attributed to the Triton's improved serviceability and the elimination of the need for valve clearances at the 60,000km service interval due to the new engine's design. This represents a savings of $450 in the first five years or 75,000km of driving.

Accessories:

An extensive range of manufacturer-designed accessories, compatible with a 10-year warranty, will be available for the new Triton from launch. Local offerings include a black aluminum hard tonneau cover, front protection bar, nudge bar, roof racks, snorkel, tow bar kit, winch cradle, and electric trailer brake harness. An electric brake controller kit can be purchased separately from Redarc. Although the maximum braked towing capacity of 3500kg is standard, none of the Triton models will be sold as standard with a tow kit; it must be ordered as an addition.

Interior:

The Triton cabin exudes comfort, featuring a combination of soft-touch materials and hard buttons. It offers ample space behind the wheel for the driver and a passenger, with increased front shoulder room by 49mm. The rear seat accommodates three adult passengers with generous leg and headroom. Additionalswas the introduction of wireless smartphone charging and Wireless Apple CarPlay.

Drive Quality:

Mitsubishi's focus on local road conditions and Australian market needs has resulted in a suspension setup that offers both rugged off-road performance and composed on-road handling. A new ladder frame chassis, larger front shock absorbers, and an updated leaf spring setup help retain control, while minimizing friction and improving unsprung mass. The Triton GLS and GSR models feature a unique 18-inch wheel with 265/60R18 Maxxis tires, ensuring optimal grip no matter the terrain.

The Triton drives smoothly, both on tarmac and off, and its powerful new engine provides a quiet and responsive ride, even when unladen. Incorporating electric power steering, the Triton offers ease and accessibility for new dual-cab ute owners with its light touch and responsive handling. Fuel economy is improved, with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 7.7L/100km, a reduction from 8.6L in the outgoing model, thanks in part to the automatic Stop Start function.

Off-Road Capability:

Proven on a variety of off-road terrains, the Mitsubishi Triton exhibits impressive off-road prowess. The GLS and GSR models are equipped with Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD-II system, featuring terrain control and hill descent control, allowing drivers to apply their chosen mode on the fly, including 2WD, 4WD high (4H), and either Gravel, Snow, Mud, or Sand modes (4HLc) or a locked center differential and low range gearing (4LLc) for navigating tricky terrains.

Safety Features:

All 2025 Mitsubishi Triton models share the same safety features, regardless of trim level. These features include seven airbags, forward collision mitigation with pedestrian and cyclist detection, rear AEB, emergency lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and driver monitoring technology, which recognizes driver drowsiness or micro-sleeps, adjusting forward collision mitigation parameters as necessary. A camera mounted on the steering column uses facial recognition to monitor the driver, although it fails to recognize drivers wearing sunglasses and can be problematic at times.

Recent ANCAP testing awarded the 2025 Triton a five-star safety rating.

Comparison to Competitors:

The 2025 Mitsubishi Triton competes favorably with its dual-cab ute rivals in many aspects, including value, features, and practicality. The available 10-year warranty and capped-price servicing costs ensure peace of mind for buyers and help avoid unexpected maintenance costs.
