In the picturesque town of Baden-Baden, Mayor Dietmar Spaeth (independent) has highlighted structural problems that are putting a strain on the city's finances. The dwindling income from trade tax, coupled with increasing expenses, particularly in the social sector, has left Baden-Baden in a precarious financial position.

The state government of Baden-Württemberg, under the leadership of Minister of the Interior Thomas Strobl (CDU), has come under criticism for its response to Baden-Baden's plea for help. Strobl has been responsible for the rejection of the city's plea, a decision that has left Mayor Spaeth frustrated.

The state government's limited support for financially struggling municipalities is due to a combination of factors. Legal and fiscal constraints, such as the debt brake principle and fiscal discipline, limit the borrowing and spending capacity of municipalities and states receiving restructuring aid. The state government also prioritises targeted investments over broad financial bailouts, focusing on infrastructure and modernization projects that promise growth.

Frank Mentrup, the Mayor and President of the Municipal Association in Karlsruhe, shares Spaeth's concerns. He believes that Baden-Baden is just the tip of the iceberg and expects more cities to face similar financial struggles. Mentrup has criticised Thomas Strobl for not helping the financially strapped city of Baden-Baden, accusing him of failing to take real responsibility for issues concerning municipalities.

The city of Baden-Baden is currently in a dire financial situation, with the town hall only able to pay its bills until mid-year. Mentrup also criticised the state government for not understanding the financial struggles of cities and communities, a sentiment shared by Spaeth.

As the situation in Baden-Baden continues to unfold, the President of the Municipal Association, Frank Mentrup, remains particularly concerned about the city's plight. He made these comments to the "Badische Neueste Nachrichten".
