Aldi and Lidl: Who's currently battling for dominance in Germany's discount store sector

Competing retailers vying for leadership in the discount sector - Competitive Discount Battles for Market Dominance

Germany's love for discount stores continues, but the competition is heating up, particularly between powerhouses Aldi and Lidl. With a combined growth of almost a third since 2019, discount stores generated around 77 billion euros in 2024, according to YouGov market research. Other chains like Penny, Netto, and Norma also experienced strong growth.

Aldi, historically larger, is split into two separate companies: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, which can impact their market presence differently. While Lidl, gaining traction in sustainability, edged out other supermarkets in Germany's supermarket sustainability ranking.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine affected market dynamics, with both discounters grabbing market share during this period. As of 2024, discount stores control around 38% of the market, while full-range supermarkets have nearly 29%.

A closer look reveals an intense competition between these retail titans. Supermarkets gained market share at the start of the pandemic, but the shift to discount stores due to inflation-driven food price increases has since stabilized. Robert Kecskes, a YouGov expert, believes this intensifies competition not only between distribution channels but also among discount stores themselves.

Recent days have seen a price war between Germany's leading discount stores, Aldi and Lidl. Lidl announced its "biggest price reduction ever," lowering prices on over 500 items by up to 35%. Aldi swiftly responded, revealed plans to permanently reduce the price of around 1,000 items and add hundreds more in the coming weeks, including dairy products, meat, frozen food, sweets, and cleaning products.

With food prices soaring 36.5% higher than the 2020 average in May, these price cuts are likely to be sustained. Stephan Rüschen, a retail expert, believes these price cuts will be long-lasting as public scrutiny is keen. He also suggests that Lidl is aiming to snatch Aldi's price leadership, with plans to potentially surpass Aldi Nord and Süd in terms of turnover.

The competition between Aldi and Lidl has significantly impacted the German retail market, driving it towards more efficient and cost-effective shopping experiences. It has also fueled innovation in sustainability practices and expansion strategies, pushing both retailers to enhance their environmental credentials and global footprint.
