Commencement of Huddersfield's affordable housing project is underway
Unity Homes and Enterprise, a BME housing association formed in 1987, is set to expand its presence in Kirklees with a new housing development in Huddersfield. The Plane Street development will see the construction of 30 new affordable homes, catering to the current and future needs of the local community.
The construction of these homes will take place on a brownfield site, previously occupied by the Stile Common Infant and Nursery School. This sustainable approach to land use is in line with the central government's directive that every council in England must prioritize brownfield developments to ensure developers can build on derelict patches in England's 20 biggest towns and cities.
Cedric Boston, the chief executive of Unity Homes and Enterprise, has expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating, "We are committed to building high-quality properties for local communities in need of affordable housing." The new housing scheme will consist of two and three-bedroomed properties, adding to the 1,386 properties Unity Homes and Enterprise currently owns and manages for tenants from various communities and ethnic backgrounds in West Yorkshire.
Cllr Graham Turner, the cabinet member for finance and regeneration, has voiced his gratitude for being able to help deliver much-needed affordable housing in the market town. He emphasized that the council is using its land to address the shortage of affordable homes. Council officers and partners at Unity Housing, West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and Homes England are involved in getting this new housing project off the ground.
Kirklees Council, Homes England, and West Yorkshire Combined Authority have collaborated on this initiative. Cllr Turner reiterated, "We are delighted to be working with Unity Homes and Enterprise to deliver these much-needed homes for our community."
As the Plane Street development progresses, it is expected to contribute positively to the local economy and provide quality, affordable housing for those in need. The completion of this project marks an important step in Unity Homes and Enterprise's continued commitment to improving the housing landscape in Kirklees and West Yorkshire.
