Collaborative Initiative Unveiled for Leadership Figures
A Coordination Center for Enhancing Water Retention in Forests has been established in the Rhein-Sieg district, marking a significant step towards sustainable forest management and regional climate change mitigation.
The new center, funded by LEADER funding and the European Union, along with contributions from the participating municipalities and the Rhein-Sieg district, aims to implement solutions that make forests more resilient to heavy rainfall events, drought, wildfires, and heat. The Cologne Regional Government approved the project that led to the establishment of this center.
The center's primary task is to identify, plan, and oversee measures to improve water retention in forests. This includes focusing on small, natural measures such as permeable dams, adapted path structures, and natural retention basins.
The project, with a duration of three years and a total budget of approximately 268,500 euros, brings together various actors, including forest owners, forest management associations, government agencies, universities, and citizen initiatives. The involved partners in the LEADER project "Water Retention in Forests" in the region are the cities of Rheinbach, Meckenheim, and Euskirchen, as well as the municipalities of Swisttal and Weilerswist, and the Rhein-Sieg district, working together in a coordination office to improve water retention in forests.
Achieving water retention, forest strengthening, and climate change mitigation requires a collective effort. The center's creation was made possible by the granting of funding eligibility to the joint funding application by the steering committees of the LEADER regions Voreifel - Die Bäche der Swist and Zülpicher Börde.
The forest's health plays a significant role in regional climate change mitigation, including CO2 storage, cooling surroundings, recharging groundwater, and stabilizing the landscape water balance. The center aims to connect these various actors to work towards a common goal: a more resilient and sustainable forest ecosystem.
The establishment of the center is not just for flood protection, climate change mitigation, and the future of local forests, but also for the region's overall nature and climate change mitigation. The center's work will span across municipal, city, and county borders, consolidating existing concepts and ideas, and initiating new measures to ensure a greener and more resilient future for the region.
