City enforces lax parking regulations, promising stringent penalties in the forthcoming days
In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Munich has introduced new parking regulations effective as of August 1, 2025, aiming to ease the already tense parking situation in the city centre.
One of the key changes concerns stationary motorhomes, a long-standing issue in the city's neighbourhoods. The new regulations restrict the issuance of parking permits for vehicles over six metres in length, except in exceptional cases. This decision, made by the city council in March 2025, does not affect the parking permits of existing motorhomes.
Regarding sidewalk parking, there is no recent change documented that permits or modifies these rules for motorhomes in the city centre. Parking on sidewalks is generally prohibited, and this would apply especially to large vehicles such as motorhomes, unless explicitly allowed by local signs.
For general safety and access, parking violations, including illegal parking at high-traffic venues like the Allianz Arena, are actively penalized. This likely extends to misuse of sidewalks or restricted zones. In districts such as Giesing and Laim, the police have already issued many fines for illegal sidewalk parking.
On match days at the Allianz Arena, motorhomes, also known as caravans, face specific restrictions. They are not allowed to park in the North visitor car park without a valid match day ticket, and this car park must be vacated by the evening before the matchday if no ticket is held.
The city council's decision does not affect the parking permits of existing motorhomes. However, for new motorhomes, the annual fee for Munich's parking license areas remains at a low 30 euros per year, despite advocacy for an increase in fees.
The Mobility Department in Munich is implementing new measures to further develop parking management in the city, with the aim of easing the already tense parking situation. The new regulations are part of these efforts to improve the parking situation in Munich.
