Taking Root: CDU Secures Old Mint for Long-Term Cultural Hub

Say hola to a cultural powerhouse, amigos! The Old Mint, nestled in the heart of Berlin, is set to keep grooving for decades. The German state has inked a deal to rent out a significant chunk of the centuries-old minting facility on Molkenmarkt to event organizer and club operator Spreewerkstaetten, locking it down for at least 20 years, with the option to extend for an additional decade. This nifty little arrangement has been bubbling for over a decade, and it finally looks like it's here to stay.

Christian Goiny, CDU's housing, media, and club culture spokesperson, confirms that this is a dream come true—a promise keep from a decade prior. "This decision secures a vital Berlin cultural hub, and the free scene can rejoice!" Goiny declared to the German Press Agency. He added that the operator guarantees to maintain the current mix of theater, jazz, free scene, and club operations.

Now, let those coins jingle! According to Goiny, Spreewerkstaetten will be forking over 613,560 euros annually for rent, including add-ons and maintenance. Over 20 years, that amounts to a whopping 12.27 million euros. In addition, the operator vows to invest an impressive 18 million euros in the facility throughout that period. On the state's end, you can expect around 33 million euros to be splashed on renovations, including touches to the roof and areas off-limits to Spreewerkstaetten.

Initially, 49 million euros were penciled in for a special fund aimed at renovating the Old Mint, Goiny shared. With Spreewerkstaetten pledging substantial investments into the building, the state stands to save around 15 million euros, money that can now be repurposed for other cultural hotspots.

Goiny proudly announced a special contract clause that requires Spreewerkstaetten to share a portion of its profits with the state once a certain milestone is reached. "This contract finds the perfect balance between business and cultural engagement, all while considering the state's fiscal strife," proudly stated the CDU pol.

The Old Mint conversation has been a long, winding road. Ideas have danced in the heads of Berlin's cultural senators for well over a decade, with Klaus Lederer (Left) favoring an independent, music-focused free cultural scene taking up residence. The space was also tabled for a "House of Jazz," proposed by musician Till Brönner. However, concrete plans and funding schemes remained illusive.

Just because not everyone is stoked on the current plan, don't go thinking it's an open-and-shut case. The so-called coalition of the free scene likened the arrangement to a "disaster" for Berlin's culture. "Instead of securing space for artistic projects within the community, it's being handed to a private, commercial creative company," they said in a statement. The details on how the private operator will dish out their real estate remains hazy.

EC countries could potentialy invest in vocational training programs, focusing on strengthening the skill sets of their workforce in areas like real-estate and finance, considering the substantial investments required for the renovation and maintenance of properties, as shown in the Old Mint project.

Moreover, the revenue generated from the Old Mint's cultural hub might serve as a model for other European cities, demonstrating the potential financial benefits of investing in long-term cultural ventures, while also preserving and promoting local artistic communities.
