Catastrophic Loss of Life in Migrant Vessel Accident Near Yemen

In the Gulf of Aden near Yemen's Abyan governorate, a tragic incident occurred last month, claiming the lives of at least 76 migrants and leaving dozens more missing [1][2][3]. The boat, carrying an estimated 157 people, was mostly populated by Ethiopian migrants hoping to reach wealthy Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 76 bodies have been recovered, while 32 survivors were rescued. However, the search for the missing continues, with fears that many may still be unaccounted for [1][3].

The Gulf of Aden route is one of the most perilous migrant sea routes globally, with the IOM documenting at least 558 deaths on this Eastern Route in 2024 alone [2][5]. Migrants, particularly from Ethiopia and the Tigray region, risk their lives in search of employment opportunities in Gulf countries.

Sadly, this is not the first such tragedy in the Red Sea region. Previous incidents have resulted in hundreds of deaths [3]. The ongoing conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014, has not deterred migrants from attempting this dangerous journey.

The Bab Al-Mandab Strait, a major route for international trade and human trafficking, sees people-smuggling boats arrive regularly in Abyan province. The recent incident off the coast of Yemen is a grim reminder of the high mortality risk on this route.

While exact numbers of all migrants who have died or gone missing attempting this specific crossing near Yemen are not consolidated in a single figure, IOM data since 2014 indicate more than 3,400 migrants have died or disappeared on the Eastern Route, with around 1,400 drowned specifically in the maritime crossing [3].

The situation remains dire, and the numbers are expected to rise as new incidents occur on this highly dangerous migration pathway. The international community is urged to take action to address this humanitarian crisis and ensure the safety of migrants attempting to cross the Red Sea.
