My car photo game is all thanks to the legendary Larry Chen. Millions of us can attest to that, having discovered his work during those formative teenage years. A Missouri Ozarks native, he took our breath away with his stunning Canon shots that we'd never seen before. And even after nearly a decade in automotive media, I'm still blown away!
His 400+ page magnum opus, Life at Shutter Speed, features 20 chapters, each representing a year of his illustrious career. The book is structured in reverse chronological order, starting with his recent work highlighting insane factory builds and celeb-studded shoots, all the way back to 2005 and his early SoCal event snaps for fun. It's published by the esteemed Carrara Books, a firm that continues to pump out fabulous physical car media in today's digital landscape.
Flipping through the impressive 2,500 or so photos has made one thing clear: nobody's nailed the automotiveshot like Larry Chen. From a 1,300-horsepower Nissan concept to Ken Block's Hoonicorn Mustang sliding around a low rider, he's captured it all, and in his one-of-a-kind style that's notoriously hard to replicate.
Jeff Zwart, a seasoned car ad producer, Pikes Peak racer, and talented automotive photographer himself, summed up Larry Chen perfectly in his foreword for the book: "Larry seemed to be everywhere on the mountain, and not just shooting the race action in a new way, but capturing the tension in the pits in a pure, authentic way that made me feel he was one of us."
And if you cut that quote after the first five words, it'd still be accurate.
If the internet has played any part in your car hobby over the past 20 years, you've been touched by Larry Chen's work. That wallpaper of the epic S14 drift car seared in your brain since childhood? Yep, he shot it.
He even graced the hallowed grounds of GT Live 2004, the Japanese Super GT exhibition that effectively launched the Fast and Furious generation into JDM legend. Fate brought the most prolific and recognizable artist in car culture to a show now etched in automotive history.
The phrase "Larry seemed to be everywhere" rings even truer after hearing about a conversation I had recently. Talking to a car enthusiast, I was surprised to learn they were a fan of Larry Chen. No big shock, though, 'cause who isn't?
Grab the Standard Edition copy of Life at Shutter Speed for just $124.99. Unfortunately, the Limited Edition copies costing $274.99 have already sold out.
