The state capital's traffic signs usually direct the masses to avoid the daily downpour, steer clear of roadblocks, or inform about upcoming events. Yet, there are instances where other messages capture attention - and none are more debated than the latest one causing a buzz in the "City of Roses." It poses the question: "Giving cyclists enough distance? Stop being a menace!"
The message is part of a state-wide initiative led by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), The Working Group of Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities in Thuringia (AGFK-TH), the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) Elbe - Saale, the Thuringian Road Safety Association, and several other partners.
City Pushes for Stricter Enforcement
"When overtaking a cyclist, maintaining a safe distance is crucial for our two-wheeled friends to feel secure and boost their confidence to pedal more frequently," explains Sophie Seher of ADFC Thuringia. "This benefits everyone since it eases the traffic congestion for drivers relying on their vehicles. We're thrilled that Erfurt took part in this campaign, and we invite every other Thuringian municipality and district to lend a hand."

"To instill a lasting awareness about the minimum overtaking distance, Erfurt intends on teaming up with the state police for a distance measuring exercise," shares Dirk Büschke, the city's cycling officer. "It's essential to make every road user grasp the significance of a minimum distance through inspections and, if necessary, penalties."
