California Invests $1.9 Billion in EV Charging and Hydrogen Infrastructure
The California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved a significant 1.9 billion dollar investment plan for electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. This substantial funding, part of the 48 billion dollar California Climate Commitment, aims to expand zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure across the state.
The CEC's Lead Commissioner for Transportation, Patricia Monahan, stated that the investment focuses on ensuring zero-emission refueling infrastructure for all, with a priority on low-income and disadvantaged communities. The approved funds will add 40,000 new chargers statewide, bolstering the nearly 94,000 public and shared private chargers already installed.
The investment plan projects the need for 1 million chargers for 7.1 million EVs and 114,500 chargers for 155,000 electric trucks and buses by 2030, as per the second Assembly Bill 2127 Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Assessment. The 1.9 billion dollars will be spent over the next four years, with at least 50 percent earmarked to benefit priority populations. Funds will be distributed through competitive grants for direct incentive and rebate programs, benefiting businesses, non-profit organizations, tribes, and public agencies.
With this investment, California expects to create the most extensive charging and hydrogen refueling network in the country, supporting the growth of light, medium, and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles. Building on previous investment plans and federal funding, the state anticipates reaching 250,000 chargers in the next few years, making clean transportation more accessible and convenient for all Californians.
